When you think of or talk about food in Shizuoka Prefecture, Sawayaka is always almost going to be the first thing that comes up. It is almost like the mascot of Shizuoka at this point (besides Mt. Fuji of course.)
They are famous for their beef hamburger steaks, and let me tell you, they lived up to and actually surpassed the hype.
I honestly can’t remember the exact location of the place I went to, but I do know for sure that there is one in the station or at least very close to it, so if you don’t mind lining up or waiting (because there is a sign up sheet where you put your name down) then venturing out a bit further to other cities will probably allow you to get in quite easily.
First off, the price. Compared to some places in Tokyo or actually in other prefectures even, they can get quite expensive. This likely stems from the fact that they are using beef, and like other countries as well it tends to be the most expensive meat, but they still tend to be quite a bit more than Sawayaka, and at a lesser quality.
Sawayaka on the other hand has a few options for portion sizes, but their most popular being the “genkotsu burger” is a round ball of beef (almost like the size of a baseball) where it is cut into half and served on a hot skillet. It is 250 grams and around 1700 yen. That for me, is a great deal.
Now for the taste, and I will preface it now, but the quality of the beef they use is incredible.
I am not going to lie, I was initially a little shocked at how the beef was served because although they grill the outside of the ball, they serve it to you when the heat hasn’t yet made its way to the centre and hence, it is pretty much still raw.
But, as I mentioned before it is served on a hot skillet so it cooks while on the table, and to be fair, after trying their beef patty’s with their signature sauce, I wouldn’t even mind trying it fully raw – it was that good.
It is tender, super rich, and almost a little nutty I would say. Anyways, it was very good quality and probably some of the better beef I’ve had throughout my lifetime.
Their sauce however, might have been the star of the show. It is almost like a glazed onion sauce, maybe almost similar to a flavour you would find in a french onion soup except in sauce form. When you order your hamburger either the staff or yourself (I honestly can’t remember) pour it over top and the flavours of it almost seep into the patty while it still continues to cook on the skillet.
Oh, and though a small amount and honestly nothing special they do include a few vegetables on the plate as well, because you know, health comes first.
They also give a plate of rice and the nice thing about Japan is that there really isn’t a food that doesn’t pair well with rice. There are also very few foods served without it, so I hope that you like it.
Not to mention, this place had extremely good service. Even for Japanese standards. I am talking to everyone with a bright smile on their face and very quick response times to calling on them. It was very impressive.
Also (at least at the location I had gone to) they had a little spot where kids could pick out toys to take home. I thought it was a nice touch.
This is a really high quality restaurant and if you come to Shizuoka and are going to eat something, this has to be on your list!
